Hike, Scotland, Coulin
Where
The Coulin pinewoods are located in Glen Torridon to the southwest of Kinlochewe. We accessed the smallest of the three areas of pines right off the A896 about 3K east of Loch Clair. Next trip I’d like to get to the woods on the west and north of Loch Clair and maybe also follow the River Coulin upstream.
As with most of Scotland’s natural forests, the deer population in Coulin has destroyed any semblance of natural regeneration . Mostly what you find here are magnificent old trees then heather. There is very little undergrowth and very little chance that the woods will survive the old age of the existing trees unless the deer are culled properly or fenced out.
To call this a hike is a slight (huge) exaggeration. Mary did match her top with the heather, though
