Ride - Scotland, Glenmore

Where

This is my eighth ride in one of the remnants of Scotland’s ancient pinewoods. I rode from the north shore of Loch Morlich into Glen More and past the Glenmore Lodge. The trail is really easy at least up the the Lochan a Chait just past the Ryvoan bothy where I turned around. I took a look at the Ryvoan bothy and An Lochan Uaine.

At one time the pines here were amongst the biggest recorded in Britain. Sadly much of the old forest is gone having been felled for the first world war and its immediate aftermath. Around 100,000 trees were taken down during that period. The Forestry Commission purchased the forest in 1923 and made things worse by planting non-indigenous species in the open spaces. They reversed this mess in the ‘90s when they started to remove foreign species and replant the native pines. Deer have been culled and apparently the forest is indeed expanding again. The plan is to rejoin Abernethy and Rothiemurchus through Glenmore.

Gear and Nutrition

Warm today at 70F so shorts and single layer up top. Ucann products were in play. I used their starchy drink at the start of the ride and a couple of hours in started to eat one of their energy bars. I also drank electrolytes through the ride.

SurPug performed well throughout the ride.
