Garden - winter bird feeder activity

Every time I came down for a break there were birds at the feeder today. The cold and windy conditions must represent a bit of a conundrum. Do they venture out to feed or do they stay sheltered out of the wind-chill? I’m not sure what these are. They don’t seem resplendent enough to be American goldfinches but maybe their winter foliage is less brightly yellow.
