Flagrant fragrance
Our front garden is largely shaded from direct sunlight by the house and it's not a place I readily associate with vibrancy. However, the heavy scent from the Sarcoccoca this week has been quite incredible. I don't have a picture because the flowers are so small and close to the ground that it's a pain to view. The plant more than makes up for its size by giving off one of the most attractive and distinctive fragrances of the year. I wonder if it is so strong that it needs to overcome the low abundance of potential pollinators. In other words it needs to be strongly scented to attract pollinators that are few and far between at this cold time of the year. Who knows.
Growing close to the Sarcoccoca are more of these little yellow things (that I must get the name for).
